Chiddingstone Causeway, Kent

Chiddingstone Causeway grew around the station, which rather than carrying the name of the parish, is named after the larger community in nearby Penshurst.  The village is well known as the home of the firm Duke and Sons (established in the 1860s, manufacturers of cricket bats and balls).

An interesting view of the main road through Chiddingstone Causeway in the early 20th century.  I suspect the motorcycle and sidecar belong to the photographer.  This card is number 42 in the Wells Series published by H Camburn of Tunbridge Wells.

Number 25 by the same publisher is taken further back down the road, and at a later date as the hedge has vanished, the pavement improved and a new community hall erected.  It was posted in 1940.

Another Camburn card, this time number 40, shows a cottage called Stonelake.

This view of the cricket field is number 50235, published by E A Sweetman.  It was posted in 1963 and shows the same houses which appear in the first card on this page, separated by 40 or 50 years.

H H Camburn also published a view of the cricket field in the 1920s, from a slightly different angle.

Beckett's Farm

Beckett's farm is up a small track which leaves the main road and crosses the railway line between Chiddingstone Causeway and Bough Beech.  This H Camburn card is numbered 20 and probably dates from the 1920s.

St Luke's Church

St Luke's church was built in 1898 to replace a tin church which remained in use for many years afterwards as the village hall.

The next three cards, again from the Wells Series, were published for Martin, The Post Office, Chiddingstone Causeway.  They date from c.1910.  They are numbers 13 18 and 11 respectively.
