St Stephen, Hammerwood, East Sussex - 8th February 2004

This extraordinarily large church doesn't really have a village!  It is situated on the main road between Tunbridge Wells and East Grinstead.  Nowadays it is part of the United Benefice of Cowden, Hammerwood & Holtye.

St Stephen's church was built between 1879-90 by E F Loftus Brock. It occupies a fine site and is built of stone in the Early English style with a south east tower with spire.  This picture is taken from the field behind the church.
