Polegate Windmill, East Sussex - 17th October 2004

This windmill has been engulfed by a housing estate.

When we visited it was undergoing major renovation work. The mill is a brick built tower mill.

Polegate Windmill was built in 1817 for Joseph Seymour, who came from Pounsley near Blackboys. When the windmill was built it was in the parish of Willingdon and known as Willingdon Mill, but since the creation of the Civil Parish of Polegate on 1st April 1939, which included the Mill, it has been known as Polegate Windmill.

There is an interesting website about this mill here.

I have been provided with information about various Sussex windmills from  Simon Potter who runs a brilliant site about Sussex Mills.

More information on this and other wind and water mills may be found on the excellent  Windmill World site.

Check out my other windmill photographs in my Windmill Album.
