Balcombe Railway Viaduct, 17th December 2003

On a fine sunny and frosty morning I stopped to photograph this magnificent structure which carries the Brighton mainline over the upper reaches of the River Ouse, which in days gone by was navigable to this point.

This viaduct contains 11 million bricks and opened on the 12th July 1841.

At each end of the viaduct are four attractive pavilions, the picture below shows the ones at the northern end.
