Mount Washington Cog Railway - New Hampshire, USA

We visited the West Coast of the USA in June 2002 - partly on business, but took a few days holiday around the work appointment.

Climbing to the summit of Mount Washington, this wonderful railway was the first to use a cog engaging in a rack to drag the locomotive up and to brake the descent. Since 1869 the railway, built from the start for tourists, has been making the 3 hour return trip.  An excellent day out - not just for train buffs.
