Akebia on the pergola - 2nd May 2004

We brought this plant in a pot from our previous home, now it is in the garden and is the best its ever been, with the purple flowers a real feature hanging down from the pergola.

Akebia quinata (Lardizabalaceae) is a hardy twining shrub, native to China, Japan and Korea.  It seems to like our garden, and we are pleased to say we have layered a piece to take to our next home.

Both the male and the female flowers appear in the same raceme, and have a pleasant smell. The plant is sometimes called Chocolate Vine.
