Sissinghurst is famous for Sissinghurst Castle, not a real fortified castle with moat, but a very large house built in the early 1500's by Sir Richard Baker. In the 1930s the remains of the house was bought by Vita Sackville West, the author, and her and her husband transformed the gardens into a spectacular showpiece of English gardening. Today the property is owned and managed by the National Trust and well worth a visit.
