Formerly St Luke's Presbyterian Church, establised by Dr William Boyd in 1854, it claims to be one of the earliest Presbyterian foundations in the south of England. The building was designed by Henry Carpenter in 1857 in the Early English style.
The stone building has been extended and altered several times, the tower and spire being added in 1865 and the chancel and hall in 1909.
