Calvert Memorial Methodist Church, West Hill, Hastings, East Sussex - 17th August 2005

Situated in Mount Pleasant Road, this church was erected in 1891 (Hastings & St Leonards Times, 3rd September 1881, p.5) in the Early English style executed in red brick with stone dressings.  The present building replaced an iron chapel called 'West Hill Wesleyan Chapel' opened in 1881 (Hastings & St Leonards News, 29th May 1891).

It was founded by Jabez Stace and James Calvert (died 1892), who was a pioneer missionary to Fiji.  The church had been given Calvert's name by 1894 (Hastings & St Leonards Observer, 22 September 1894, p.3).
