This is an attractive church situated in South Street. It was designed by G E Street and built in 1867-8. The Early English style is executed in red brick with stone dressings.
The tower is on the north west corner and there is a canted nave.
The church was founded by George Whelpton and cost nearly £20,000.
The parish was merged with St Peter following demolition of that church in 1971.
